A few years ago at a meeting in Brussels, I watched as a presentation for a brilliant idea fell completely flat. A group of 20 industry leaders from around the world couldn’t get a grasp of the concept. Why? English was the problem. The presentation had been in English, given by someone who wasn’t a native speaker to a room full of non-native speakers. This is a situation I’ve discussed with senior executives time and again. You’re at the top of your profession, you know your industry inside-out and you have a business to lead. Now do it all in a foreign language. It’s a big ask, but for many senior European leaders, this is daily life. When you have a critical presentation, a business pitch, or an international training event, it can make a big difference to have someone who’s been there and done it to help you prepare thoroughly. Being a language teacher isn’t enough.
